A Child Centered Weekend

For this Mama and Papa Bear, life tends to revolve around our little bears. We think of meaningful ways to spend time with them and watch them flourish in the company of friends and family. This weekend like most was exactly that- playful, fun-filled, and child centered.

It started with morning coffee but we deviated slightly from our typical Saturday morning coffee date at Land of a Thousand Hills. We ordered our coffee to go and enjoyed the sunshine, blue skies, and green space that overlooks Towne Lake. Liam loved running around and climbing on all of the rocky surfaces. Atticus desperately tried to keep up with his big brother as he crawled around on all fours. We commemorated the moment with an adorable candid picture in front of their, “Happy Fall, Y’all” display.

Liam put his handwriting and art skills to work with a homemade birthday card for his friend Calix’s Ninja Turtle themed 5th birthday. He created an amazing Rafael drawing he was incredibly proud of. I can only hope Calix loved it as much as Liam did. That afternoon, we headed to Urban Air Trampoline Park to celebrate the birthday boy with two hours worth of hopping, bouncing, jumping, and climbing. Liam had an absolute blast chasing his friends down the trampoline runway and through the three story obstacle course. The party ended on a high note with a bright green, “Cowabunga, Dude!” birthday cake. Liam and his friends had plenty of green icing around their faces to prove it was a treat they truly enjoyed.

Later that night, Sean and Liam headed over to his elementary school for their annual Boo Bash. To get in the holiday spirit, Liam put on his Batman chest piece and mask. He’s saving his Darth Vader costume until he can trick or treat in it on the 31st. This Halloween themed event included a haunted house, bounce houses, and plenty of Halloween candy to make any child beam from ear to ear. Liam especially got a kick out of pretending to be a statue in the haunted house and scaring students when they walked past him. For a child who absolutely loves Halloween, I can’t think of a better suited opportunity to spook his peers than with this.

On Sunday morning, Liam, Atticus, and I ventured out to H-E-B for our weekly grocery run. Because Liam loves Halloween so much, every year he gets to select an indoor and outdoor decoration to add to our growing collection. After much deliberation at H-E-B, he decided we needed a 4 foot tall inflatable pumpkin, ghost, and bat lawn ornament. This purchase proved to be ideal find at a great price!

All in all, it was the kind of weekend that left this Mama Bear feeling happy and fulfilled because there truly is no greater joy than seeing your children happy. Smile on, Mama Bears!

Friday Night Bites

Tonight we enjoyed a family outing in the neighborhood at Friday Night Bites. Local food trucks, live music, and some great fare provided all the entertainment we needed for an enjoyable evening together.

With an assortment of vendors, choosing the perfect dinner proved to be a difficult task. After some window shopping, we decided on Falacos- a food truck specializing in vegan, gluten free taco balls.

falacos
According to their website, falacos are: “Absolutely freakinly delicious falafel balls fried in peanut oil, set on a corn tortilla with an original hummus creation, fresh veggies, and sauces that will blow your mind. Falafel + Taco = Falacos”
After much deliberation, we decided on kimchichi fries. This dish served up a dose of spicy, sweet, salty, and sour with agave pecan hummus, green apple slices, spicy chili sauce atop fried falafels. This delicacy is then topped with sweet hoisin sauce, scallions, and kimchi. All of this deliciousness rested on a bed of perfectly cut french fries. We also enjoyed their Friday the 13th combo: Amazeballs served with hummus and fresh vegetables. Let me just say they absolutely lived up to their name! Quinoa balls topped with fresh hummus, mango chutney, banana peppers, and smoked paprika. So many beautiful flavors in every bite!

We found a shady spot in the grass, laid out a giant beach towel, and plopped down for a picnic. Between bites, Liam enjoyed running around the open field we were sitting in. He ran into one of his classmates and enjoyed playing with her for a bit too.

We closed out the night with N’awlins Sneaux Bawls. Sean surprised us with their three most popular items: Squashed Bullfrog, Dreamsicle, and Bayou Blue. Each sno cone rested on a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The syrup melted into the ice cream creating a beautiful marriage of sweet flavors.

Friday Night Bites offers family fun and great food every 2nd Friday of the month in the Lakeland Village Activity Center. It truly made for the perfect ending to a great work week and was an ideal way to kick off our weekend! If you live in the Cypress area, I highly recommend making a trip out next month.

Like the Seasons…

This is an open letter to my husband, Sean:

I know most days we find ourselves caught up in the hustle and bustle of life. Most mornings our alarms buzz us out of our dreamlike state and propel us full speed ahead into our day. It’s a blur of brushing teeth, getting ourselves dressed, and then making sure the boys are ready to take on their day too. I’m downing coffee and toast while simultaneously packing up lunch boxes, gathering backpacks, and divvying out vitamins and allergy medicine for Liam. Through all of this there are brief exchanges and pleasantries, but I know I never give you much more than a hug, goodbye kiss, and a salutation to have a wonderful day.

After the boys are safely at daycare, goodbye hugs and kisses sending us all our respective ways, I often find myself reflecting on the way the morning unfolded. Many times, I lose myself in thought replaying certain parts of my morning like a particularly adorable giggle from Atticus or a Liamism that made me laugh out loud. In those moments, I wish I could rewind the day and freeze it long enough to have time to exchange an embrace with you that doesn’t feel like time is working against us. To enjoy more than a brief pleasantry and instead give you something more monumental to hold on to and carry with you throughout your day.

By the time I pull into the parking lot at work, reality sets in and the marathon race begins. It’s a blur of students, parents, emails, and meetings. Each brings a sense of accomplishment, but few opportunities allow me the time to pause in my day and send you a text message telling you I’m thinking about you, am looking forward to seeing you later in the day, or am sending you my love.

By the time 4 o’clock rolls around, the whirlwind of homework, dinner, bath time, and bedtime dictates the direction of our evening only leaving opportunities here and there to exchange pleasantries about our day. Then I’m out the door for a run and you’re often still trying to knock out work after the boys are down. As our own bedtimes quickly encroach on our quality time, I often find myself wishing there was simply more time in our day. More time for the little things like enjoying a glass of wine, duking it out over a game of Scrabble, or cuddling up to watch a great movie.

After we’ve both given our best to everyone else in our day, we often are too exhausted or mentally drained to give our best to one another. I say this not out of spite because in my heart, I know we both have the best of intentions. Between parenthood and demanding professions, it’s a reality we’ve both come to accept.

With that being said, however, I need you to know that I love you with my whole heart. I love seeing your eyes light up when you’re with the boys. I love watching you lost in thought as you pour over your computer. I love clinking glasses with you and enjoying a glass of red wine in your company. I don’t always give myself opportunities to pause and say thank you for how hard you work to provide for our family. I may not always give you the best of me, and I’m sorry for that. Please know that even when I fall short, I have the best of intentions at heart. I find peace in knowing that some of the stresses we carry with us every day  are like the seasons; with time, they will change because our workload will lighten and our role as parents will shift as the boys get older and are more independent.

In the meantime, I’m hopeful an open letter written with love and sincerity will bring a smile to your face and joy to your heart. After all, Papa Bear, I love you to the moon and back!

All my love,

Heidi
